eczema

Also referred to as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a chronic skin disorder characterized by scaly and itching rashes caused by chronic inflammation. People with eczema often have a family history of allergic conditions.

EEG

An electroencephalogram is a test to detect abnormalities in the electrical activity of the brain. It is used to help diagnose and type siezure disorders; and to evaluate head injuries, tumors, infections and other disturbances of the brain.

A protein that speeds up chemical reactions in the body.

A brain disorder involving recurrent seizures.

A process which paints chromosomes or parts of chromosomes with fluorescent DNA. It is used to identify chromosomal abnormalties.

gene

The functional and physical unit of heredity passed from parent to offspring. Genes are pieces of DNA, and most genens contain the information for making a specific protein. Each gene is capable of reproducing itself exactly or changing with each cell division.

gene therapy

Treatment that seeks to alter a gene. Gene therapy tries to improve the body's ability to fight the disease or to make specific cells more sensitive to therapy.
